Have You Tried Lightlife Smart Dogs?

Summer is in full swing. That means outdoor picnics and BBQ’s are the trend. Since I’m always on the look out for healthier options, I was really excited when the people at Moms Meet asked me if I could review Lightlife Smart Dogs.

What are Lightlife Smart Dogs?

According to their website, Lightlife Smart Dogs are America’s #1 meatless hotdogs. It is plant based (soy product), certified Vegan and Non-GMO Project Verified. Each Smart Dog contains 7 grams of protein and only 50 calories per link.

Available in the refrigerated or natural food sections of grocery stores, the Smart Dogs are grill ready and check it out, costs between $2.99-$3.99 for a pack of 8.

Our experience

I was really thrilled when I received my coupons for Lightlife products. Finding the Smart Dogs though was a bit of a challenge. While there were many stores listed in their website, majority of the ones in my area do not carry the Smart Dogs. After going to at least 5 stores, I finally spotted 4 packs at my nearest Wegmans.

Since we have 4 tasters for this product (Child#2 and #3 are still allergic to soy), I decided to get 3 packs. I intended to use a pack for each suggested cooking method – boiled, grilled and fried.

This is the first time our family had vegan hotdogs. However, this is not the first vegan product we’ve tried. We’ve been eating vegan burgers and ground meat substitutes for a while now.

One of the first things, I’ve noticed when I tasted the Smart Dogs is that it is not as salty. Though the label indicated that it contains 330 mg of sodium, it didn’t taste salty at all if compared to other regular, meat based hot dogs.

Texture wise, these Smart Dogs are way different compared to the “all beef” or turkey counterparts. It’s way smoother but still has a bit of chewiness. If you or your children like the famous mixed meat weiner, I think these Smart Dogs can pass as an alternative especially if you loaded it with condiments. Take note, you wouldn’t pay extra too as a pack is still less than $4.00.

If you’re a purist (like our taste testers) though, using these as an alternative will be quite of a challenge – texture and flavor wise.
