My Honest Review of Sambucol Black Elderberry Gummies

For the past two years, I’ve seen an increased interest on supplements that contain black elderberries. Many natural living moms swear that taking black elderberry really does help their child’s immune system.

Since I’m very curious with this product, I agreed to team up with Tryazon and host a sampling party for Sambucol, a brand that creates supplements that primarily use black elderberry extract.

What exactly is Black Elderberry?

Black elderberry is a variety of elder plant that is native to Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. The berries and flowers have a long history of use in herbal medicine dating back from early Egyptian civilization. Because of its high levels of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, elderberries, particularly the syrup have become popular as a natural remedy for colds, sinus infection and flu.

Why Sambucol?

While the use of elderberries to help aid ailments such as colds, flu and and fever, Sambucol is the most extensively researched elderberry extract in the world. They only use the Haschberg variety of elderberries which are handpicked from the trees that are generations old.

A product of nearly 20 years of research, Sambucol’s unique manufacturing process best retains the most antioxidants from black elderberries. As one of the leading brands in this niche, the brand has been relied on and trusted by loyal users for years.

The Review

Sambucol has several products that include Black Elderberry Syrups, Lozenge and Gummies. For this review, the kids and I focused on the Black Elderberry Gummies.

For starters, Sambucol gummies are free from gluten, dairy, soy, wheat, nuts, eggs, artificial color, artificial flavors and preservatives. It is vegetarian and do not contains any drugs or alcohol.

Each gummy contains 50 mg of black elderberry extract which is equivalent to 1.7 grams of black elderberry fruit. Per serving, it only has 5 calories yet 45 mg of Vitamin C, 3.75 mg of Zinc, 1 gram of sugar and 10 mg. of sodium.

Taste wise, it is on the sweeter side which my kids enjoy. It has a unique berry flavor but is not overpowering. No after taste too. I like that it is easy to chew and doesn’t stick to the teeth that much. If you are not a fan of pills like me, this is definitely a big plus.

One concern that I have about this product is the high sugar and sodium content. It does contain both cane sugar and tapioca syrup. If you are watching your sodium intake, a single gummy has 10 mg.

Take note, as with any supplements, please consult with your medical professional before taking it especially if you are currently on medications.

Price wise, Sambucol products are between $5 to $17. Not bad for a natural dietary supplement.

Since we just started taking this supplement, I still can’t say if it did help boost our immune system. Since we don’t do flu shots (that’s for another post), it never hurts to try this out and see. After all, I’ve been hearing so much positive feedback on the use of black elderberry.

Have you tried taking black elderberry supplements? I love to hear your experiences too.
