88 Acres Seed Butters – My Honest Review + a Giveaway

If there’s one thing my children and I missed the most after food allergies came to our lives it will be hands down —- Peanut Butter! I was even surprised to realized that we haven’t had a jar in our home for the past 7 years. How did we survive?

Okay, I’m not exaggerating here. You see, because of our Asian (Filipino) heritage, peanuts and peanut butter are considered a staple in every home. Not only is it a traditional snack of choice, it is also an ingredient in desserts, candies, dipping sauces, marinades and even savory dishes.  After being exposed to peanuts even before they were born, they should have immunity already right? Oh well, the wonders of allergies.

For years, I’ve been looking for a good alternative for peanut butter. But due to tree nut and soy allergies, choices are very limited. Late last year though, I got a chance to try the newest addition to 88 Acres Foods. Can you guess it?  Seed Butters!

What is it?

Made with sunflower or pumpkin seeds that are roasted, spiced and ground to perfection, 88 Acres Seed Butters are full of flavor and nutrients. It is available in 3 varieties namely:

    • Vanilla Spice (Sunflower seeds with a hint of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon)
    • Pumpkin (Straight up pumpkin seeds with sunflower oil)
  • Chocolate Sunflower (Sunflower seeds with cocoa powder & cocoa butter)

All the seed butters are free of the top 8 allergens (wheat, dairy, egg, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, fish) as well as sesame. It is also gluten free, vegan, non-GMO certified and contains only organic ingredients.

Plus, the manufacturing facility is also allergy friendly.

The Taste and Texture Test

While it does not exactly taste like peanuts, I’d say it is close but with added flavors. For the purist, you can readily know the difference but in a good way. I’d compare it to “mildly flavored peanut spread”.

The vanilla spice for instance, has subtle hints of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Even though it contains organic sugar, it is not sweet at all. It’s creamy but is not smooth. You can actually feel some seeds just like a chunky variety. This gives it some crunch too.

Don’t be fooled by the green color of the pumpkin butter. It actually tastes really good. If you’ve tried the pea butters available in the market, this is quite similar but with more of the pumpkin seed taste. Creamier and smoother than the vanilla spice, this is good for those who wants extra protein in smoothies without the crunch or seed texture.

Lastly, the Chocolate Sunflower. What more can I say? It’s like chocolate and peanut butter all over again. While it’s not sweet as the common hazelnut spread (a big plus for us), it is still as decadent.

Overall, all 4 kids gave it a thumbs up.

Aside from using it as a spread or in smoothies, I’ve also baked with these Seed Butters. In fact, I used it a few times as an oil substitute in baked goods such as quick breads and muffins. The results were really good. Not runny at all. Take note, I haven’t tried it on cookies yet. Also, it didn’t turn the finished product green. I’ve had quite a number of questions about baked goods looking greenish when they use peanut butter substitutes.

With all the good things I mentioned about the Seed Butters, the only thing that makes it not a staple in my pantry is the price. $14.99 for the a 14 oz jar of Pumpkin Butter. While $10.99 for a 14 oz jar or either Vanilla Spice or Chocolate Sunflower.

For us dealing with food restrictions, it is definitely a healthy treat that’s great to have on hand.

If you are not ready to commit for a 14 oz jar, a 4 oz jar of each flavor (plus 3 seed bars) is included in the 88Acres Gift Pack for just $12. I really find it a good deal as you would be able to sample all the products of 88 Acres.

Now, for the best part. Our friends from 88 Acres would like to give a special Gift Pack for one lucky US based TFMFriend. Simply do the steps below to get free entries.
